Why we run this
Behind the calm of Friday prayers sits a mountain of hidden administrative toil. The best software isn't built in a vacuum — it's built alongside the people who keep our institutions standing.
A community hall booking that takes five phone calls. Volunteer rotas held together by 40 WhatsApp messages. Pick one bottleneck and build a clean, reliable workflow.
Classrooms with 30 children, paper registers, and hours spent handwriting progress logs. Help a teacher complete admin in seconds so they can focus on teaching.
Zakat and hardship funds handled on spreadsheets with zero audit trails. Build software that provides total financial accountability while safeguarding recipient dignity.
The 5 Challenge Tracks
Choose by the community need you care about most — not just the programming language. Each track offers 3 guided starting points, or bring your own verified challenge.
Did it genuinely solve an operational pain point? AI, apps and hardware are just tools.
Mosque operations & community access
Build a frictionless operational tool that simplifies room bookings, volunteer rotas, or facility access for busy mosque staff and worshippers.
Learning, teaching & inclusion
Build an intuitive teaching assistant or parent update tool that gives madrassah educators an hour back each week while keeping learners engaged.
Giving, welfare & accountability
Build transparent, auditable software for tracking donations, matching restricted funds (Zakat vs Sadaqah), or managing community hardship requests.
Scholarship, leadership & community care
Build a scholar-verified research tool, knowledge repository, or community care referral triage system that shows its sources and preserves human judgment.
Graduate skills & opportunities
Build a bridge connecting Islamic seminary graduates and Alim/Alimah scholars to meaningful civic, nonprofit, and professional career opportunities.
15 full challenge briefs with starter datasets and user personas are live. Venue: Thistle London Heathrow Terminal 5.
Every submission must demonstrate a working user journey that directly addresses the track problem.

Submissions & Scoring
Transparent evaluation aligned with Devpost standards. Judges are real mosque administrators, educators, and senior software engineers.
Every team submits the same clear package by Sunday 11:00 AM:
Working DemoA clickable web app, mobile build, or functional simulation showing the user finishing a real task.
Code / Design RepositoryPublic or permissioned GitHub/GitLab repository or Figma prototype with clear README.
2-Minute Walkthrough VideoA crisp screen recording showing who it helps, what problem it solves, and how it works.
Honest Build LogWhat was created during the weekend, what existing libraries were used, and where AI assisted.
Monday-Morning Deployment PlanWhat it would take for a real mosque or madrassah to test and adopt this solution.
Does the project squarely address a defined problem within the selected track? Is the problem statement clear and well-scoped?
Would this legitimately save a teacher, volunteer, or mosque administrator an hour each week? Does it improve real community lives?
Does it run without crashing? Can the judges click through an end-to-end user workflow during the live table demonstration?
Is this a creative, thoughtful approach to a known bottleneck, rather than a generic boilerplate app? Does it demonstrate genuine insight?
Is the interface clean, intuitive, and legible on mobile? Can a non-technical volunteer or elder use it without confusion?
Could an ordinary mosque afford the hosting cost? Is it easy to maintain and handover without needing a full-time dev team?
Does it respect GDPR, protect vulnerable beneficiaries, prevent hallucinations, and keep a qualified human in charge of sensitive choices?
Prizes & Impact
We don't want projects to die after Sunday. Winning teams receive cash prizes, development grants, and direct pathways to live community pilots.
Cash prizes and prototyping grants awarded to the Overall Grand Champion and top teams in each of the five competition tracks.

Top finalist teams pitch live on Sunday afternoon on the Mosque Expo main stage before 3,000+ mosque trustees, community dignitaries, and tech sponsors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about taking part. Can't find what you're looking for? Reach out directly.
Ask a questionAnyone who wants to solve real community problems! We need software engineers, data scientists, and UI/UX designers — but just as critically, we need madrassah teachers, mosque administrators, students, charity workers, and community leaders who understand the problems firsthand. Diverse teams build the most impactful solutions.
Over 40% of attendees arrive solo! On Friday evening, we host a dedicated, guided team formation session where solo builders pitch ideas, meet collaborators, and form well-rounded teams of 2 to 5 members before hacking begins.
Yes, 100% free. There is zero participation fee. All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and artisan coffee/tea), venue access, Wi-Fi, prayer spaces, and mentoring support are provided at no cost thanks to our partners and sponsors.
The hackathon takes place in person at Thistle London Heathrow Terminal 5 (Bath Road, Longford, Heathrow UB7 0EQ). It is easily accessible via the Elizabeth Line (Heathrow T5), Heathrow Express, Piccadilly Line, and local buses. Free parking is available on-site for registered hackathon participants.
To ensure a fair competition, the core prototype and code must be built during the hackathon weekend. You are welcome to come with ideas, research, wireframes, and use public open-source libraries, APIs, and frameworks — provided you clearly disclose them in your build log.
You and your team own 100% of your intellectual property. Neither Mosque Expo nor the organisers claim any ownership over your code or designs. We encourage open-source licenses to benefit the community, but the decision is entirely yours.
The venue closes at 23:00 on Friday and 22:30 on Saturday, re-opening at 09:00 the following morning. We strongly encourage participants to rest and sleep so you can build with clear minds. Attendees requiring local accommodation can book rooms at the Thistle Hotel or adjacent Heathrow hotels.
Bring your laptop, charger/power cables, any hardware or mobile test devices, headphones, a notebook or sketchbook, and your enthusiasm. We provide high-speed Wi-Fi, power extensions, food, and drinks throughout the weekend.
